     In the early 1970's, Len Kleinrock said to his friend 
     Larry Roberts, "You know, Larry, this network is growing 
     too complex to be designed on the back of an envelope." 
     Coincidentally, the logical map of the 34-node network 
     resembled just that. Roberts agreed, and he called on a 
     consulting firm to computerize the mapping process.
